350 ASAP -- Coal Moratorium -- Call NOW!

YES! CALL THE CANDIDATES. ASK FOR A MORATORIUM ON COAL ... if each of us calls each of them 350 times, that would be a statement they cannot ignore! Call Obama at 866-675-2008 . . . call McCain at 703-418-2008 ... Why? Here's why: 350 ppm CO2 -- that's where we need to go. We're over 385 now. To get back to 350 we need to keep carbon from coal buried in the ground. For now, that means keeping coal in the ground. That's why, getting back to 350 ppm requires a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants, for now, and a phase-out of old ones. We need to stop investing in, and further locking-in, our commitment to coal. Further, just as with oil, coal prices are soaring. Coal's price surges mean that any future developments that make possible capturing and securely storing coal's carbon will be even more expensive and even less attractive as "alternative energy". Our real future is with energy from free, live, fuel from the sun (solar baseload, photovoltaics, and wind, for starters). Not dirty, dead, fossilized, buried, has-been sunshine. Let's invest in the infrastructure that lets us take advantage of the "fuels" no one owns, and which we won't run out of! Whatever you make of Senators Obama and McCain's voting records, plans, and pronouncements on energy and climate -- let's let both of them know we want them to start their work as President right away by choosing fossil-fuel-free -- aka carbon-free -- running mates. Call the campaigns and ask "point blank," as our nation's leading climate scientist puts it, if they support an immediate moratorium on new coal-fired power plants, unless they capture and securely sequester the CO2 emissions from day one, and a phase-out of old plants.
