I started a recycling committee at work.

My company already buys carbon offsets for our air travel and pays a premium for green electricity in each office location, but not everyone recycles their bottles and cans.

Some of the things we have done so far include:
- Collection areas for batteries, cell phones and inkjet cartridges
- Reduced the use of paper plates and cups by using dish and glassware
- Replacement of single-cup coffee machines with machines that produce less waste
- Disposing of electronic waste properly
- Purchasing more environmentally friendly products
- Turning off lights or installing occupancy sensors in common areas and break rooms

We'd like to do more as far as our building management goes, but we're not always in control of our facilities or have the authority to install energy management stuff.

That's fine and dandy

That's fine and dandy but what about the appliances and cars that we already own. Why can't big business find a way to invent something that can cut energy costs with the stuff that we already own. There are a lot of people out there who can't afford to buy new houses or appliances or cars. I should know I am a poor person and I can't afford to purchase new stuff. So I am asking why doesn't big business just improve upon all the stuff that we have come out with in the past 30 years. Instead of just building new stuff. I have drafty windows in my house but because it costs so much to replace the windows with energy efficient windows my landlord can't afford to replace them. Why can't we fix what we already own instead of making new stuff to replace what we already have. Our land fills are getting larger because we refuse to fix something that we already own big business just tells us to throw it away. Like in that LG commercial for the LG refrigerator where the woman is dreaming about how she can get rid of her current fridge in order to get a LG fridge. It's like the commercial is telling it's viewers that if you want an energy efficient product then throw away your energy hogging product and buy an energy efficient product. How does this solve our problem by throwing something away in order to have something that says it's energy efficient. I say to big business find a way to make it's current products and outdated products more energy efficient. Because not everyone makes $20,000 or $85,000 a year most of us are just struggling to make ends meet. So I say that someone should come up with a better solution instead of just throwing away something that's not in style right now.
