Please join the 350 alternatives to a pro-coal VP group!

Call the candidates and ask them if they support a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants and if they will back up this support by choosing coal-free VPs.

Let Obama know how you feel and pop the question: (866) 675-2008
Let McCain know how you feel and pop the question: (703) 418-2008

We're only including phone numbers, no email. To make it fair.

Let's grow this group!

Ask Publicly And Broadcast the Response!

Here's one response from the Obama campaign, re the moratorium:

Small talk...

(...)

Me: Does Senator Obama support a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants that do not, from day one, capture and securely store their CO2 emissions?

Silence.

Me: So, ehh, that's my question....

Guy answering the phone: I don't know.

Me: How can we find out?

Guy answering the phone: Let me see if I can find an answer.

Me: OK, great.

(four seconds go by)

Guy answering the phone: No, I can't find out.

Me: Oh. How can we find out.

Guy answering the phone: Well you can go to the website and check out the energy plan, I'm sure it's all there.

Me: Mmm. That material is a bit ambiguous. Not a clear answer really. I think we just need a really clear answer on this. This is really the single most important thing, when it comes to really switching away from fossil fuels and focusing on the future. The climate scientists also say this is, like, the most important thing--we just have to keep the carbon from coal in the ground.

Guy answering the phone: Maybe this could be something for the debates.

Me: Sure, this would be a great question for the debates. Will you make a note of this call? Will you be sure to pass this along, that we'd like to have a really clear answer on this?

Guy answering the phone: Oh, yeah. Of course. Moratorium on coal-fired power plants.

Me: Yeah...Thanks!

Obama's office took my message and email address for follow up. I gave them my name, city, email address.

McCain's office redirected me to his website. If my questions are not answered there, they suggested communicating via the email address listed on the website. I gave them my name and city.

Al Gore's decade long challenge
By Ajay Jain Aug 11th 2008 at 7:05 am EDT (Updated Aug 11th 2008 at 7:05 am EDT)
Hi Doug,

I spoke to the Obama Call Center and left a message about Al Gore's decade long challenge to produce 100% clean electricity and for Sen Obama to vote for Solar and Wind subsidies. I left a similar message for the McCain Campaign.

phone call report

Called Obama, got a live person. A very nice, seemingly well-informed live person. Echoed my sentiments re: Coal, electric transportation, need for clean electricity generation, untapped reserves in wind, solar, wave and ocean currents. Took copius notes and requested my contact info. Seemed genuinely excited that Obama is on board with clean energy. But I did not ask about the moratorium specifically.

Will try McCain today.

Anyone have any ideas who on the short list for VP would be one of the better, pro clean energy candidates? Maybe we should be throwing our weight behind them, not just against Caine.
