Green Clean

Thanks to my friend Rachel Haller for recommending Seventh Generation cleaning products to me. I finally bought some today and they are wonderful. Not only do they smell great. but they work just as well as any other cleaning product I have tried.

What intrigues me even more is the company's philosophy that "In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." This quote is on all of their products. That really made me think of my choices and I am going to try to keep that perspective and see where that takes me.

One more thing, their site lets you sign up to get discount, newsletters, and a profile on their site. Another cool thing is there is a page for new product ideas!

If you can't measure it, you can't manage it

If you can't measure it, you can't manage it. If we are truly going to solve the climate crisis we must have tools to measure what we are doing on a daily basis. If these tools aren't tied to a financial impact then behavioral patterns will not change fast enough. Companies need to have a tool to measure when and (more importantly)...

This is my first post on my new blog. I plan on writing about enjoying the outdoors, snow skiing and other things. I also run a site devoted to reselling used snow skis. If your looking for another pair of skis, you can recycle your skis and recycyle someone else's top line skis to reduce the impact of the sport on our planet. Its all the little things we do that can make a difference in the world, not just the big things.

I also use sustainable gardening practices at home. Composting, recycling household wastes into planters, seed starting trays, and other things like that.

Happy New Year!

Are Carbon Offsets Worth It?

Nice, well-reasoned and informed piece from a Slate columnist on the value of carbon offsets and their place in helping to reduce greenhouse gases and mitigate global warming:

Last month my husband and I flew to Detroit to spend Thanksgiving with his family, and this week we're flying to Los Angeles to have Christmas with mine. Should we bother with carbon-offset programs to make up for all that time in the air, or are those things just a racket?

In principle, carbon offsets which pay for projects that reduce or sequester greenhouse-gas emissions seem like a pretty appealing idea. Sure, they may seem like papal indulgences, allowing the world's wealthy to imagine they can do business as usual without causing environmental harm. But given that everyone will be responsible for some carbon, offsets can serve to undo some of the inevitable damage caused by daily life. And by fixing a monetary value on emissions, they help to concretize the hidden costs of flying, eating meat, or whatever else you're up to.

Hi All...

Like most of you who have found this blog entry, I'm very concerned about man-made climate change, the unsustainable way we live, and the damage we're leaving our children and future generations. I should also mention, I'm not without hope.

I'm looking to meet and work with other people in the E. Brunswick, NJ area to continue to learning about the issues, share ideas, lobby for change, embark on projects, and ultimately make a difference.

Here is a very short, initial, list of things we could possibly work on together:

- Industry Speakers
- Educational programs (community, kids, schools)
- Community Participation in "Earth Hour"
- Lobbying Politicians / Government
- Write Editorials / Blogs
- Local Awareness Campaigns
- Renewable Energy (tax rebates / outcomes-testimonials / info on how to get started)
- Share Ideas

If you are also interested in these or similar topics related to climate change, please join me. We can do this together.

Kevin

The search for clean water in the coming year

I have done this year what I have done every year successively for the last few years; report on the global water crisis in an attempt to not only inform but to inspire and to move us to action. The need for that action has never been more necessary than it is now. The Earth now sits on a precipice, with man having the power to pull it back or push it off.

Around the world from North America to Africa and beyond, we see water scarcity and drought becoming more a part of daily life for more people. This does not bode well for the future as population continues to rise as the quality of life in the developing world decreases due to war, climate change, pollution, and poverty. Climate change continues to melt glaciers globally at a much more rapid pace than predicted, and man finds himself because of it at a crossroads in a world filled with war, disease, famine, injustice, poverty, and despair. It would be very easy to give up looking at the picture we have painted, but we cannot do so. Our own survival depends on how we treat this planet and our fellow man. How we react to these crises now will determine if the world falls off that precipice or is saved.

I firmly believe that even though we now live in a world of turmoil, this next year will be a year of awakening for many. There are many more organizations that are now bringing awareness and action to the parts of our world in need of potable water and sanitation. There are many more people becoming aware of not only their carbon footprint, but their water footprint as well. This past year saw a surge in activism against the bottled water industry with citizen groups across the world standing up to the corporations seeking to take our water for profit. These are good signs that point to a more intense activism in the year to come to hold political leaders accountable for policies that seek to fix water infrastructure, restore wetlands, reduce pollution, hold officials accountable for proper water management and efficient agriculture policies, and also hold them to signing a climate treaty to limit greenhouse gas emissions that lead to drought and glacier melt this next year.
However, none of these things can happen without us. Without our voices, our hands, our perseverence, and our love for this planet and for the one resource we cannot live without. It is that love and perseverence that carries me into another year of water activism and of reporting the stories of our water, it's life, and our contributions to its preservation. May this coming year bring us closer to a world where water is truly appreciated for the beautiful life sustaining source and human right it is.
Water Is Life.

http://water-is-life.blogspot.com

"Who Killed the Electric Car?"

A must see documentary. I rented "Who Killed the Electric Car" last spring and I was absolutely shocked, stunned and sickened at what I learned.

In a nut shell, between '96 - '04, GM and other car manufactures created and leased electric cars (in CA) such as the EV1 which could travel over 100 miles on a charge. This production of EC's was spurred due to California's enormous smog issues and the advent of a law that required car makers to reduce emissions. What will sicken you is how the technology and the cars themselves vanished under pressure from.....guess who? Yep, big oil!

A must see documentary, rent it today and pass the word along to your friends and family. I'm floored that so few people even know about this.
Global Warming Facts

If you are passionate about Global Warming, you should hear some of the facts real scientists have to share. Some scientists are of the opinion that the global movement created by Al Gore and others is a propaganda machine created to keep your attention focused on lies and to tap your financial resources. I do not like the idea of the public being manipulated by lies, so I created the blog to inform people of documentaries I have seen with real scientists sharing real facts about the history of the earth's climate. I agree there may be some problems with the climate, and humans may play a part, but the facts are very different than the meme Global Warming wants you to think.

The Scam of Global Warming on Google Video:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1656640542976216573

This Global warming campaign as far as I've found hasn't mentioned global dimming. Global dimming is a science based on water evaporation science experiments that have been going on for a long time. If you haven't heard of it, research it and learn more.

It's my opinion that you can do more locally to better your environment than anything you can do globally at this point. This is why I am creating a blog for Pinellas County, because I live here. There are things we can do together to help the climate, and I have some ideas:

1. We can stop eating meat, because wide spread meat production wastes resources.
2. We can grow gardens everywhere and contribute to the restoration and maintenance of the atmosphere and air quality, as well as our health.
3. We can create our own movement to make change locally and connect to other local activists doing things to better their lives and the life of the planet.
4. We can stop feeding our attention and finances to a propaganda machine that is more focused on manipulating the public than informing them of real facts about climate change.

If you have any questions or want to contact me, go for it.

Season's Greetings!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

As the new year approaches us, and new national and local leadership take the reins, let's stay diligent in making energy and environmental issues a priority.

The challenges of the economy are great. However, there is no conflict between so-called environmental issues and a healthy, vibrant economy where each and every one of us can live a rewarding life. Of course, the status quo is challenged. But by taking advantage of the opportunities for change, solutions are certainly within grasp. Let's stay up to the task of helping this become a reality!

Peace to All!

I have just joined WE and find most of it's goals coinside with Pickens Plan. I don't know how many members of each organization belong to both, buth the combined voices of more than 3.7 million people would certainly be more effective than going it alone. I just wonder if each organization could at least acknowledge each other. Keep up the good work.
