The Canadian Press- - Toronto mayor David Miller says the city is joining the ranks of Canadian municipalities considering a ban on the sale of bottled water.

Miller says city council will examine how the city can curb bottled water waste as part of a larger effort to reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills.

A report outlining the city's options will come before council in November.

Miller says Toronto's tap water is more pure than the leading brand of bottled water.

His comments come after the city of London, Ont., banned the sale of water bottles in their municipal buildings on Monday.

Other Canadian cities, such as Kitchener, Ottawa, and Vancouver, have all expressed interest in a similar ban.

Please write the mayor and council members in support.
This morning I woke to find it 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit). I stepped outside and could hear the sound of two neighbors' window-unit air conditioners, running. Of course, it's strange, because the outdoor tempreture is already cooler than the recommended setting for an AC, 24 C, 75 F.   Read More »
I just watched this great video in which activists helped a business improve its revenue while becoming more energy efficient. You can watch the video here, and I highly recommend you do. The group is called Carrotmob ("carrot," as in using carrots and not sticks). They're also hiring and looking for volutneers.   Read More »

Hello Tally:

Thank you for contacting Sobeys Customer Care. We understand and share your concerns for the environment.

Sobeys is committed to working collaboratively with its corporate and franchise stores to promote energy conservation and recycling initiatives. The topic of recycling and biodegradable products is a priority as vendors, municipalities and government work together to define and promote programs. We constantly evaluate ways to reduce, reuse and recycle in all aspects of our business.

In a move to divert plastic bags from the waste stream, Sobeys Inc. introduced a "Green Bag for Life", a reusable grocery bag that is guaranteed for life. It is unique among Canadian grocers because if the bag wears out, customers can return it to any participating store for a free replacement. All worn bags will be recycled.

New plastic bags now being introduced at Sobeys, IGA, Foodland and Price Chopper stores contain a minimum of five percent recycled material and will bear the message: This bag contains five percent recycled content. Finally, an in-store plastic bag recycling program for customers and staff is currently being tested by the Company.

We appreciate your comments which we have shared with our Sobeys associates.
