Greening the Lawn...Even Mow

Here's an article on green options to mow your grass, Greening the Lawn...Even Mow.

On a personal note, sorry I've been for a while. I recently moved from New Orleans, though in the last few weeks I made an ill-timed visit that gave me yet another hurricane evacuation. Global warming is real.

I have just signed up for cessation of physical phonebook delivery. It's a quick thing that can quickly snowball into a big impact if you take the couple minutes to just fill in your name & address, then forward it on to others.
Here's a good article from grist.org available http://www.grist.org/advice/how/2008/08/05/.

Lately, the world news has been filled with stories of hungry people struggling to feed themselves as food prices rise dramatically. Even in the U.S. and other wealthy countries, where the situation is not as dire, people have been altering their eating and spending habits to adjust to the higher bills.

When eating out, you often need paper napkins, and if you're like me, you don't want to run out once you sit down. That means, once you're done, you might have some un-used napkins. Don't throw them away. Put them in your purse, pocket, glove compartment, etc. It's always handy to have them around and put them to good use.
The purpose of this group is to share advice on living in an environmentally friendly way. It is not to sell things; most posts involve buying less, not more. And if one product is recommended over another, it is out of concern for the Earth, not self interest.

PlanetSave.com offers a way to make sending email green. For every email you send from one of their accounts, they purchase and protect five square feet of rain forest. So, it's an easy way to help the Earth.

An alternative to letters to the editor

While I aplaud anyone compelled to write their editor regarding environmental issues, I do question the efficacy of an organization, like this one, prompting its members to write their editors. What I'd recommend instead is prompting the members in a focused way to write and confront journalists who do a particularly bad job of covering the environment.

Turn off the AC and Cool Down

This morning I woke to find it 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit). I stepped outside and could hear the sound of two neighbors' window-unit air conditioners, running. Of course, it's strange, because the outdoor tempreture is already cooler than the recommended setting for an AC, 24 C, 75 F.

Print Double-Sided

Occasionally you've got to print a formal document, one that prevents you from re-using one-sided paper or printing in draft mode. But there's still a way to be more environmentally friendly: print the document double-sided. Even if you don't have a printer that automatically prints double-sided, there's an easy way to do it, and I'll tell you how.

I have the great misfortune of having Windows Vista as my operating system. But if there is some consolation for the frequent lock-ups and freezes, it may be this feature. It allows me to easily adjust the power setting of the computer. (And you can do the same thing with a Mac.)
