We Need 100% Clean Electricity In 10 Years

Free Us From Our Addiction To Oil

America is addicted to oil. Everyday, we fill up our tanks with 390 million gallons of gasoline. And while we pay high prices, oil companies are drowning in profits. Recently, Exxon Mobil announced the largest quarterly profits of any company in American history. At the same time, we are importing nearly 70% of our oil - over 10 million barrels per day, much of it from unstable regions of the world. Burning this oil is hurting us economically, risking our national security, and destroying the planet.

With 100% renewable and clean electricity, we will be able to reduce our reliance on this dirty and expensive oil with electric and hybrid vehicles that plug in to a clean electric grid. The electricity to power an electric vehicle will cost the equivalent of less than $1 per gallon of gasoline. And the price will be stable, because the sun and wind are abundant and free.

Rebuild Our Economy

These are hard economic times. However thousands of new companies, millions of new jobs, and billions in revenue can be generated by the industries that will help us produce 100% of our electricity from clean sources. Last year, annual installed wind capacity more than doubled and solar PV expanded by 45%. These industries create demand for manufacturing, engineering, and construction. Many Americans already have the skills for green jobs or can develop them through job training programs, community colleges, and universities.

New vehicles like fuel-efficient hybrids and plug-in vehicles will bring in a wave of new jobs for our struggling automakers and offer them an opportunity to be global leaders. Several automakers are in the process of developing plug-in hybrids and plan on putting them into production in the next 2-3 years. Electric vehicles are on their way to commercial scale too.

Save Us From This Climate Crisis

Scientists are clear: human activities are contributing to global warming by adding large amounts of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere. Our fossil fuel use is the main source of these gases. Scientists tell us that stopping global warming is urgent -- we have just a few years to turn around the growth of greenhouse gas pollution in order to avoid the worst effects. We are already seeing these effects - recent work indicates there is a 75% chance that within five years the entire polar ice cap will completely disappear during the summer months. And, according to a recent report from a dozen US agencies, climate change will likely lead to an increase in extreme weather here in the United States. That means more droughts, heavy downpours, excessive heat, and intense hurricanes.

Truly Clean Electricity

We can harness clean, abundant, renewable energy from the sun, the wind, and from underground geothermal sources, freeing ourselves from dirty, polluting, and increasingly expensive fossil fuels. And we can get much more out of the electricity we produce through vast untapped energy efficiency in our homes and businesses.

The US has some of the world's best solar and wind resources in the world. One company calculated that a parcel of land in the southwest, 92 miles on each side, could power our entire electricity system. Similarly, enough wind blows each day through the Midwest corridor to, again, power our entire electricity system.
