FPL Group Goes for Solar
In another sign that solar energy can power our future, Florida-based giant utility FPL Group announced this week that its renewable energy division, FPL Energy, will build a $1 billion 250-megawatt solar power plant in the Mojave desert in California. The FPL project, combined with another 250-megawatts of solar energy announced this week, will lead to 500-megawatts of additional clean energy in California.
"Five hundred megawatts - that's substantial," said spokesman George Douglas of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. "Projects of that size begin to show that solar energy can produce electricity on a utility scale, on the kind of scale that we're going to need."
